We feel active MC stages and step ups are a less than ideal way to amplify the delicate signals coming from an MC cartridge - they tend to bleach tonal colours, add grain and kill dynamics, whereas a well designed step up transformer provides gain and impedance matching without these negative side effects.

The StepNote 1 is a high performance step up transformer designed to give the best performance possible at a very reasonable price and is perfect for entry level to mid market moving coil cartridges.
High quality materials are used throughout including a non ferrous (aluminium) case and silver connectors.
The transformer is a 1:12.5 design which will give just under 22dB of gain. It also offers particularly wide bandwidth, with a -3dB point at 100 kHz into a 47k OHM load, which ably demonstrates the high quality of the transformers used inside.
